Positive Quote: “The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.” – Max DePree
I like this quote. It helps me reaffirm what a leader should do.
To me, defining reality means setting goals, a vision, expectations and overall communicating with your team. They need to know where their place is in the overall landscape of things.
Saying thank you is something most people don’t regularly make time for. Some leaders believe if you say it too much you get a less motivated team, while others believe if you say it once in a blue moon it has more weight….I believe there is a balance. Say thank you, be genuine. Your team can tell when it is non-genuine thanks; sorta like you are ticking off a box. Be specific, what exactly are you thankful for. Remember, what you thank is what you are in essence asking for the behavior to continue.
Being a servant, that is a hard one. A servant typically has negative connotations. I see a servant as someone who does for others. A leader does for their team, since it is the team who executes and makes the accomplishments reality; being a servant does not mean submissive or subservient. I think that is a distinction many do not understand.
