Positive Quote: “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” – Vince Lombardi
I think this quote is trying to say that your ability to recover from defeat (being knocked down) is more telling about your character than whether or not you were knocked down to begin with.
This reminds me of someone I used to work with. I’ll call him Joe. One of Joe’s main goals was to be promoted to a manager position in his field. When an opening came available, he applied. He put his heart and soul into the company and you could not ask for a more dedicated employee. Joe’s issue in the beginning was learning how to navigate the waters of transitioning from an individual contributor to a manager of people. It was more about other’s work than his. His work ethic would mean less than his direct reports. It is a difficult transition for many. Fast forward about 4 manager positions later and each one Joe applied for and did not receive over the course of several years. The way Joe handled the rejection, which was a wonderful sight to see. At work he was still as dedicated as ever, his outlook and demeanor remained positive and he did not let any disappointment reflect. Over the course of the years Joe continued to get up, dust himself off and ask what he needed to learn, do, or achieve to reach that next level. Then he took the advice to heart and worked on those areas. I can smile when I think to the 5th open manager position Joe applied for….. this one he received. Fast forward a year and a half later and Joe continues to work to be a good manager. He was always a leader.
I think that Joe inspires others to not give up, to get up when you are knocked down and to keep trying.
Joe – if you are reading this…. I am proud of you….
I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. We went to Chicago for the 1st time and had a wonderful time. We went to Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, and Powell Bookstores (there are 3 in Chicago). We took an architectural tour through downtown and it was amazing, the buildings have such character. We fit a lot into a weekend. I think one of our best decisions was not to drive, we took the train up.
Have a happy Tuesday!
