“When looking to hire people, give their potential to grow more weight than their current skill level. What they will be capable of tomorrow is more important than what they can do today.” – Ed Catmull

Positive Quote: “When looking to hire people, give their potential to grow more weight than their current skill level. What they will be capable of tomorrow is more important than what they can do today.” – Ed Catmull

I have had many different jobs over the course of my career. The one thing they all had in common was that the job before I moved on was differed greatly from the job when I first started.

Adaptability is key; things change, requirements change, sometimes even the mission may change.

Earlier in my career I knew someone who was an expert with dot matrix printers, those printers that you fed paper into and it had holes on the edges. Well, when laser printers became more prevalent, this person did not want to adapt. It became more about being adaptable to grow a new skill versus their current knowledge of a soon to be outdated mode of technology. The position did not change, the job title was the same, yet the work and what the person worked on became different. Being able to grow, adapt, and change is a step in the right direction.

“Keep working even when no one is watching.” -Alex Morgan

Positive Quote: “Keep working even when no one is watching.” -Alex Morgan

To me this quote is talking about internal, self-motivation. How we keep going without having someone there.

One thing I do to keep motivated is to set personal goals that translate across multiple areas of my life. Then when I am not quite feeling like doing something I can think back to the goal and more often than not I get a little extra steam to perk myself up.

What do you do to help stay motivated?

Have a tremendous Thursday.

“I’ve never scored a goal in my life without getting a pass from someone else.” – Abby Wambach

Positive Quote: “I’ve never scored a goal in my life without getting a pass from someone else.” – Abby Wambach

I thought with the World Cup going on I would use a quote from a soccer player.

I think the above quote resonates on and off the field.

From a business perspective, I believe it reinforces that no one person can do anything alone. We all need help from others in many various ways. It takes collaboration and teamwork to accomplish great things. The quote helps remind me that when things go well and I have a success, I need to share the success with those that helped. I accept the fact that my team is what builds the success; I am more of the coach.

“When we enlarge our view of the world, we deepen our understanding of our own lives.” – Yo-Yo Ma

Positive Quote: “When we enlarge our view of the world, we deepen our understanding of our own lives.”  – Yo-Yo Ma

It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day of life. It takes an effort to ‘enlarge our view of the world’. It can take going outside of our comfort zone. It takes time.

I have to ask myself – what have I done lately to enlarge my view of the world?

Have a wonderful Wednesday. Here is to all of us purposefully enlarging our view of the world.

“Uniformity is not nature’s way; diversity is nature’s way.” – Vandana Shiva

Positive Quote: “Uniformity is not nature’s way; diversity is nature’s way.” – Vandana Shiva

Have you ever noticed that most people try to make order out of chaos, or perceived chaos? Removing weeds from gardens, organizing cupboards, and rows of plantings on farms… most are done in the name of efficiency. Yet, when I am driving down the road and I see a patch of pretty, vibrant wildflowers (or flowering weeds), I take a second or two or may even stop to marvel and admire the colors and the scene before me. Yet, it is not ordered, it is not uniform and it definitely is chaotic, with flowers or weeds blooming here and there.

I am not saying order and efficiency are bad. I believe in them and my desk must be clear at the end of the day, as well as my inbox. However, I do enjoy the richness, vibrancy, and varying differences of other aspects of life. I enjoy talking to friends from different countries, meeting people from different backgrounds, experimenting in the kitchen with different foods.

I agree with this quote in that diversity is nature’s way, anything other than that is people made.
