“You are not here to merely make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement.” – Woodrow Wilson

Positive Quote: “You are not here to merely make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement.” – Woodrow Wilson
I am reading this book and at the beginning of a chapter, I came across this quote. I reread it a couple times and then took a picture on my phone so I could remember it. It stuck with me.
Isn’t that the question that has passed through the ages?
· Why am I here?
· Why do I exist?
We can get so caught up in living life and rushing from one activity to the next. Do we lose sight of our impact to others? I know I do. When I interact with people, I don’t think to myself, what impact am I having on them? Or, am I enabling them to achieve anything?
I think what I took away from this quote is that, as I live my life I am touching others in both positive and negative ways. I need to remember this. I need to use this knowledge to work towards ensuring the majority of my interactions are more positive than negative. I can control my reactions to others and by doing so, my life would be much more relaxing, calm, and enjoyable.

Positive Quote by Jim Rohn on the Challenge of Leadership

Positive Quote:

“The challenge of leadership
is to be strong, but not rude;
be kind, but not weak;
be bold, but not bully;
be thoughtful, but not lazy;
be humble, but not timid;
be proud, but not arrogant;
have humor, but without folly.” – Jim Rohn

Being a leader is not an easy role. In my opinion it is one of the most mentally and emotionally challenging roles, yet also one of the most rewarding. Thankfully, I have more good days than not and each day is an opportunity to touch someone’s life for the better while growing as a person and helping others.

It is a balancing act for sure, with taking care of the people while taking care of the job duties and responsibilities. Yet, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love what I do and the career path that I am on. I continue to be blessed with having great mentors and other leaders who help me shape into who I am and continue to evolve. No one can do it alone and the more support we have, the more successful we are.

My goal is to be better today than I was yesterday and keep my focus.

“You learn something everyday if you pay attention.” – Ray LeBlond

Positive Quote: “You learn something everyday if you pay attention.” – Ray LeBlond

Days come and go, time passes, and we can so easily get caught up in the routine of it all. How often do we stop and pay attention, learn, or even appreciate what is around us? I know that for myself, it is not often enough.

The learning can be something simple, yet meaningful to something that can alter your way of thinking about the world.

For example, the other day I was making dinner and the habit took over, the routine of add this spice, add this vegetable, add x, y, or z. My daughter came to the table and she looked at the food, looked at me, and said “Mom, don’t you know me?” it seems a month ago she had changed and no longer liked a certain food type. In the back of my mind, I vaguely remembered….. yet, it did not make it to the section of my brain where I actively knew and learned it. Another example is more work related….we each have administrivia (as I call it) that we have to accomplish as part of the job. We could easily just rush through it and go on to the next item on our to do list, or we could take time to see what we are doing and how it can leveraged in other ways, to re-use, reinvent, to learn from.

What things do you pay attention to?

A poem by Berton Braley on Recognition

Positive Quote: A poem by Berton Braley on Recognition

Since I liked the poem I posted yesterday by Berton Braley I decided to post another one. This one is titled “Do It Now”. It can be said, “Do it Now”, show your appreciation, as once the moment is passed, we cannot get it back and recognition should be made as close to the event as possible. I hope you enjoy.

Do It Now
By Berton Braley

If with pleasure you are viewing
any work a man is doing,
If you like him or you love him,
tell him now;
Don’t withhold your approbation
till the parson makes oration
And he lies with snowy lilies on his brow;
No matter how you shout it
he won’t really care about it;
He won’t know how many teardrops you have shed;
If you think some praise is due him
now’s the time to slip it to him,
For he cannot read his tombstone when he’s dead.

More than fame and more than money
is the comment kind and sunny
And the hearty, warm approval of a friend.
For it gives to life a savor,
and it makes you stronger, braver,
And it gives you heart and spirit to the end;
If he earns your praise – bestow it,
if you like him let him know it,
Let the words of true encouragement be said;
Do not wait till life is over
and he’s underneath the clover,
For he cannot read his tombstone when he’s dead.

A poem by Berton Braley on Thinking

Positive Quote: A poem by Berton Braley on Thinking (yet not his poem titled The Thinker)

“I think” it is a very thought inspiring poem. I will have to ready more of his works. I hope you enjoy.

You say “I think” ten times a day
Or fifteen times, or twenty
And even more. Well, anyway
You sure repeat it plenty.
But pause and ponder half a wink
And start your brain-cells clinking;
“I think” you say, but do you think
Or only thinking you’re thinking?

How often is the thing you’ve thought
Out of yourself created
And not a dictum you’ve been taught
And simply imitated?
Into a revive you sink
And like an owl you’re blinking,
But do you actually think,
Or only Think you’re thinking?

“I think” you say – and ladle out
Some fusty old opinion
That probably was known about
In Pharaoh’s dominion.
Do new ideas ever slink
Into your cranium’s chinking?
I wonder – do you really think
Or only think you’re thinking?

Traditions, customs, fill your head
And some of them have virtue,
But most of them have long been dead
They fester there and hurt you.
Son, chuck that clutter in the drink,
Wake up – don’t sit there blinking!
Wake up! And then perhaps you’ll think
And not just think you’re thinking!

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

“You are today where your thoughts have brought you. You will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” – James Lane Allen

Positive Quote: “You are today where your thoughts have brought you. You will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” – James Lane Allen

I have been told that I have a tendency to over think things. I would agree that I like to think of some off the wall scenarios, or ‘What Ifs’. For example: Say my teenage daughter wants to go out to the movies with her boyfriend. My mind will race through the possible (not probable) scenarios….

• What if it isn’t a suitable movie?
• What if they try to get in to an R rated movie?
• What if they don’t have enough money?
• What if they are not really going to the movies?
• What if they fall asleep at the movies?
• What if they run into people they don’t like, how will they react?
• What if she is offered drugs?
• What if someone sneaks in alcohol?
• and the list of ‘What Ifs’ can go on and on……

Yet, this doesn’t make me tell her no. It actually has me saying yes, then as we say goodbye, I do the typical mom statement of “Don’t do drugs, don’t drink, don’t have sex, etc…” to which she laughs. Yet I know that somewhere it is getting through.

My particular way of thinking has brought me to who I am today and tomorrow, I will be wiser (hopefully), more tolerant, more patient, and have less of a tendency to overreact (the don’t kill the messenger mentality). As for my daughter, no matter the differences of opinions, I know she has a heart of gold and her mistakes are the ones everyone needs to make in life to learn and grow. Hopefully, I am showing her that everyone grows, we all make mistakes, and just because we think something doesn’t mean it is…. there is no other shoe to drop. We are who we are and we should embrace that while striving to be better.

I hope that my thoughts continue to take me places I have not been, to challenge myself outside of my comfort zone, to continue to grow…. To enjoy life….

“Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance.” – Samuel Johnson

Positive Quote: “Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance.” – Samuel Johnson

It has been a couple of weeks since my last posting of a positive quote. I am glad I am able to get back to it. It helps center me.

I chose this quote because it helps me remember that persevering amidst obstacles or roadblocks can lead to great work being done. I know I am not the strongest person physically in the world, yet I also know that if something is important and I am passionate about it, I will persevere.

At this time of year, Spring, my mind turns to renewal and a chance to refocus on many things. Maybe that is perseverance too….being able to go back to something and dust it off and see what you can make of it.
