“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” – Albert Einstein

Positive Quote: “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” – Albert Einstein

This quote brings a smile to my face. It takes me back many, many years ago when I was just starting out in my career in IT. I started in IT in the help desk environment in the software area and it was a challenge in the beginning to explain to a caller what was wrong and what I was doing to fix it and how I was making sure it would not happen again or how to prevent it from happening. If I could not explain it simply, sure enough it would happen again and a call back would occur. This forced me to not only know what I was doing; I had to understand the whys behind it. By understanding the whys, I was able to relate more clearly and simply to the person to prevent it and in the end have a happy customer.

As I have moved in my career path and taken new roles, new responsibilities, I look back and focus on understanding things well enough to explain them to someone with no inherent knowledge. If I can get the concept across, then I know I know my job better.

What do you think of this quote? How do you work towards keeping things simple, yet still maintain their meaning?

Have a tremendous Tuesday.
