“Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.” – Bill Nye

Positive Quote: “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.” – Bill Nye

There are several reasons I like this quote. One of them is because as a younger person, I watched Bill Nye on television…. Saying his name in my head and the music comes to life, he was (and is) Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Science is not my strong suit, yet I found him to be engaging in the topic which drew me in. So, one thought on this quote is that even if someone is not wholly interested in the topic, an engaging speaker or presentation can pull someone in further than they would have gone in on their own. This quote has me remembering that.

Also, when I put aside who the quote is from and just read the quote, it reinforces that everyone, yes everyone has value and something to add. I need to be open to others and just because we may differ on an opinion doesn’t mean theirs is invalid. Everyone came to the specific point in their life differently and those experiences cannot be duplicated.

Knowing that, well, it helps me go into each new experience where I meet new people for the first time, optimistic and looking for what I can learn or take away from the experience. It also has me thinking, when people meet or talk to me for the first time, what am I teaching them or what are they taking away from me.

“The truth you believe and cling to, makes you unavailable to hear anything new.” – Pema Chodron

Positive Quote: “The truth you believe and cling to, makes you unavailable to hear anything new.” – Pema Chodron

I came across this quote on a friend of mine’s twitter feed. It stuck with me.

I ask myself…

• Am I clinging to a truth that is not a truth?
• Am I available to others ideas?
• Do I cling to things I need to let go?
• Am I open to others opinions?

As you can see, this quote has resonated with me. I am glad I came across it.

“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier” – Mother Teresa

Positive Quote: “Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier” – Mother Teresa

I know that I cannot control the actions and feelings of others and I know this quote is not intended as such. However, I can control my actions and how I react to and with others. This is what this quote reminds me of.

It is the little things that matter…..

• Do I smile when I talk on the phone…. yes, others can ‘hear’ that
• Do I say please, thank you, your welcome, and other types of words with intent
• Do I help create an atmosphere of openness and approachability
• Do I stop what I am doing and pay attention when someone comes to talk to me
• Do my words or actions have a negative effect on the ‘messenger’ of not so good news
• Do I smile when I say hello to people
• Do I say good morning and good bye to others as I start and end my day
• Do I fulfill my commitments to others
• Do I recognize and acknowledge those that have done good work or things

As you can see, this quote has me thinking….. I think that is a good thing.

“Dwell in possibility” – Emily Dickenson

Positive Quote: “Dwell in possibility” – Emily Dickenson

One of the reasons I like this quote is that is that it does not have limits. The limit is what I make it. Isn’t that what possibility is?

When I think of dwelling, to me that means not a one and done, more of a focus and keeping it sunning in my mind, may not always be at the forefront, yet it is there. The next step is taking the possibility and putting arms around it to make it a specific goal that can be attained.

It brings to mind the question… what is my possibility of today?

Have a fabulous Wednesday.

“Good leaders inspire people to have confidence in the leader. Great leaders inspire people to have confidence in themselves.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Positive Quote: “Good leaders inspire people to have confidence in the leader. Great leaders inspire people to have confidence in themselves.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor Roosevelt is one of my favorite First Ladies. I admire her uniqueness and ability to be herself.

What this quote helps me remember is that a leader has an obligation to build their people, to get their people to a point where they can look back and say “I did that”.

I have worked for not so good leaders, good leaders, and great leaders. In each instance, I have learned something and taken away a nugget of knowledge. For the leaders who were great, I found myself super motivated and excited that I was making a difference. Reading this quote reinvigorates me.

“You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan

Positive Quote: “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan

Reading this quote, I find it reminds me that we each are our own worst critics. We expect more from ourselves than from others, or at least I do. I find myself trying to fix the ails of my world as a first inclination. I smile, because this is so clear to me. My teenage daughter will oft times start a conversation with me by saying, “Mom, I need you to just listen and not fix” as my indicator to not step in and recommend a course of action.

I think having high expectations is a good thing. As long as it is tempered with the knowledge that no one can do anything 100% by themselves; then understanding that what is a high priority for you, may not be for someone else.

I will continue to set high expectations for myself, because to me, to do otherwise is akin to being on a sail boat without a sail. My personal expectation of myself is to be a better me each day.

“Confront the difficult while it is easy; accomplish the great task by a series of small acts.” – Tao Te Ching

Positive Quote: “Confront the difficult while it is easy; accomplish the great task by a series of small acts.” – Tao Te Ching

Confrontation is not a word that comes easy to most people. I have found that quite a few people avoid confrontation and may even think of it in negative terms. To me, if you are sincere, respectful, and tailor your delivery to your audience, confrontation can be a good thing. When I stop and think about it, I find it surrounds me. From some interactions with my teenage daughter, to a service man who did not complete a job at my home, to the person who called the wrong number and is upset that I am not who they think I should be. In each of these cases, the confrontation can be simple to detailed, yet should not be avoided. After a while, it gets easier and then tacking something in the early stages is better than being forced to deal with it when it has grown into something horrific. Being aware of issues and accepting personal responsibility to confront as well as collaborate and address things head on versus ignoring them in the hopes they will go away… well, to me that is a path towards accomplishment.
My recent confrontation I am dealing with is my feelings about my daughter going to college next year. My way of dealing with it while it is easy is breaking it into bite size chunks… talking about specific schools, majors, visiting campuses, and being open to knowing she will probably not go to the university in town and will be further away. So, our small acts are setting deadlines for ourselves, her with writing her essays and us, as parents, with scheduling trips and working on forms together. I found that this is keeping me sane.

What do you think of this quote? Here is to small acts leading to accomplishment down the road.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.
